I made this special Sgian Dubh for a cooper I met at Feis Ile, the annual Whisky / Music Festival on the islands of Islay and Jura on the Scottish West Coast.
He was there demonstrating his cooper’s craft of how whisky casks are made. After chatting with him I learned that he was soon to be married so I promised him a Sgian Dubh for his wedding. I got a couple of staves from a cask he’d been working on and made this for him using that wood, a pebble from the beach at Caol Ila Distillery, a Damascus blade and Sterling Silver fittings. We were commissioned to create these unique Platinum wedding rings along with a special Sgian Dubh & Sgian Brew Set.
Both of the wedding rings featured a Tree of Life design and the bride’s ring had feathers around the ring to complement her engagement ring design and was carefully shaped to fit alongside it, whilst the groom’s ring featured a bee and and a bear.
Their wedding venue was the Royal Lochnagar Distillery so the couple sent us some wood from one of the distillery’s whisky barrels from which we made a special set of Sgian Dubhs and Sgian Brews, they also kindly sent a lovely bottle of 12 Year Old Royal Lochnagar Whisky from which we used a drop to mix with oil for polishing the wooden handles. Each Sgian was engraved with the recipients initials and the lower ferrules of the Sgian Dubh and Sgian Brew of the bride and groom were engraved with their Tree of Life design to complement their rings. We had a great time at the Loch Ness Whisky Festival. The whisky tasting boat trip we went on raised funds for the RNLI and the raffle raised funds for the Glen Urquhart First Responders. We donated a Sgian Brew made from an Isle of Jura Whisky barrel for the raffle prize. Hope you enjoy the photos. Continue reading
