I’ve just finished crafting this pair of Sgian Dubhs using some materials collected from our visit to the Speyside Whisky Festival earlier this year. Their handles are carved from a Glenfarclas whisky cask which we bought along with a couple of bottles of when we visited Glenfarclas, which is one of my favorite distilleries !
The blades are Damascus Steel and the sheaths are sturdy leather while the fittings are Sterling Silver, hallmarked at the Edinburgh Assay Office with our stamp ‘LNS’ (Loch Ness Silver). The pommel stones were cut and polished by our friend Nat Forno of ‘Scottish Gemstones’ from some pebbles from the River Spey which runs through the famous Speyside Whisky region. I made this special Sgian Dubh for a cooper I met at Feis Ile, the annual Whisky / Music Festival on the islands of Islay and Jura on the Scottish West Coast.
He was there demonstrating his cooper’s craft of how whisky casks are made. After chatting with him I learned that he was soon to be married so I promised him a Sgian Dubh for his wedding. I got a couple of staves from a cask he’d been working on and made this for him using that wood, a pebble from the beach at Caol Ila Distillery, a Damascus blade and Sterling Silver fittings. We had a great time at the Loch Ness Whisky Festival. The whisky tasting boat trip we went on raised funds for the RNLI and the raffle raised funds for the Glen Urquhart First Responders.
